Chasing Sunsets with Kristin Horstman: Guest on the Sober Edge Podcast with Teri Patterson

SUPPORT YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM AS PART OF YOUR ALCOHOL-FREE JOURNEY

Perhaps you have been told that you need to support your nervous system as part of your AF journey. You might have wondered, how exactly does one do that?

I was invited by my friend and colleague, Teri Patterson of The Sober Nutritionist, to be a guest on her amazing podcast, The Sober Edge.

In this episode of Chasing Sunsets with Kristin Horstman, Teri and I chat about how to give your nervous system a little extra love.

I share my philosophy of ‘chasing sunsets’ as a beautiful example of finding activities that calm and center our mind and body. I also share three practical ways to get started: grounding, centering, and orienting.

It can be so hard to gather our thoughts or change direction once we get ‘triggered,’ so I explain some tactics to help you come back into the present moment.

One highlight for Teri was learning about the limbic brain (our emotional brain) and how it doesn’t understand language, explaining why simply telling someone to ‘calm down’ often doesn’t work. Instead, we need to recognize what's happening in our bodies to better regulate our emotions.

I also discuss:

  • Perfectionism

  • Polyvagal Theory

  • How focusing on the body brings us into the present

  • How focusing on our thoughts leads us to the past or future

  • How to recognize when we are regulated or dysregulated

If you’re familiar with me and ‘Brighten Your Life Coaching,’ you’ll know I have a passion for a non-profit organization, CMC, Foundation For Change. This organization helps support family members whose loved ones are dealing with substance use. In this podcast, I share the philosophy of CMC, which is based on science and kindness. CMC goes beyond offering support and actually teaches skills to help one feel empowered to care for their loved one. This program can help families let go of the outdated ‘tough love’ method and lead with connections.
