Binge Drinking: It’s a Killer!

Reading the tragic tale of a man whose vacation turned fatal due to binge drinking was like a punch to the gut for me. 😩

The headline, "Father Dies Trying to Drink All 21 Cocktails Offered at His Jamaican Resort" is both shocking and heart-wrenching. This true story brought up feelings of sadness and frustration within me because it was completely preventable, and the aftermath for his family must be devastating. 😔💔😩

It’s an extreme case of binge drinking that serves as a stark reminder of the harsh realities associated with alcohol consumption. It's critical that we understand these facts and spread awareness to avoid more families losing their loved ones to alcohol. 🙏🏻❤️

Did you know?

  • Every year, alcohol takes the lives of 3 million people globally.

  • In the United States alone, binge drinking has spiked by 21% since 2020, with heavy drinking following suit with a 15% increase during the same time.

  • The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) defines binge drinking as a pattern of drinking alcohol that brings the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) to 0.08%. This typically happens when a woman consumes 4 or more drinks, or a man 5 or more drinks, within about 2 hours.

  • Shockingly, about 60 million people (21.5%) in the United States aged 12 and older reported binge drinking in the past month, according to the 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH).

Alcohol doesn't discriminate; it affects virtually all tissues in the body. Even a single episode of binge drinking can impair the immune system and lead to acute pancreatitis in individuals with preexisting pancreatic damage. Over time, repeated episodes of binge drinking contribute to chronic diseases such as liver disease and various types of cancer.

The consequences are dire, with approximately 140,000 deaths in the United States between 2015 and 2019 being attributed to alcohol misuse, half of which were associated with binge drinking.

These statistics are a wake-up call to the severity of the problem. 😱💀

For me, this topic hits close to home because I, too, have been guilty of binge drinking in the past. I have experienced firsthand the negative impact it can have on one's well-being. In my gray area drinking phase, I experienced numerous blackouts, both fragmented (partial, which typically occur with a BAC of 0.06-0.14), and en-bloc (complete, which typically occur at a BAC of 0.14 or higher).

That means I regularly consumed more alcohol than my body could process in a short window of time. 😩

These photos might look happy, but it was in 2018 when life wasn’t going well. 😣

I remember feeling so sick all of the time (nauseous), and, as you can see, I was very bloated. My face was so different back then! 😬

I don’t miss those days at all 🙌🙏🏻

It's a dangerous cycle that can have severe consequences. 😬

My goal in sharing this is not to judge, but to educate. By sharing these facts with you, I hope to give you knowledge and empower you to make informed decisions regarding alcohol consumption.

As always, this is a judgment-free zone, and I'm here to support you on your journey. Let's prioritize our health and well-being together. 🙏🏻🙌

I'm rooting for you! ❤️
